Biomedical Innovation and Translation (BIT-Lab)
As part of the B.I.T. Lab project, Reutlingen University is establishing a research centre for biomedical innovation and the transfer of research into practical applications. In recent years, the university has reoriented its focus and developed a specialisation in biomedicine. The B.I.T. Lab will be integrated into this specialisation, and will strengthen innovative, application-oriented biomedical research in Reutlingen. The research project based in this facility focuses on developing a human in vitro model of the blood–brain barrier to investigate therapeutic approaches for treating malignant gliomas. Previous studies have often still relied on animal experiments or model systems, the results of which are only of limited applicability to humans. This is precisely where the research project comes in. The research space and the shared, modern infrastructure are also intended to synergistically strengthen collaboration between the disciplines of biomedicine, computer science, biomaterials, bioanalytics, and medical technology. As part of the project, the training programme will, amongst other things, establish an innovative mentoring programme in collaboration with companies, to provide career guidance and foster networking opportunities for early-career researchers. Companies and partners from the education sector will also be specifically involved in training initiatives. Through project-based learning in real-world research environments, students develop research skills, whilst PhD students and postdocs acquire leadership skills. Practical experience in entrepreneurship and science communication further promotes the transfer of knowledge into practical application. The B.I.T. Lab research facility and the opportunities it offers are intended to further enhance the University’s appeal and make the region even more attractive to up-and-coming talent in the field of biomedicine.
